"Nursing home," "senior residence," "rest home," "day care"… the terms are used interchangeably, but they aren't the same. Understanding the differences helps you choose the right option for your loved one.
Senior residence
A permanent home for older adults, with professional care around the clock: nursing, medical attention, meals, activities and companionship. The modern approach is that of a warm home, not a cold institution. (That's what we are at Casa Palmira.)
Nursing home
Traditionally, "nursing home" is used as a synonym for residence, though the term carries an outdated image. Today, good residences stand out for their warmth, professional care and dignity, far from that old idea.
Day care center
The older adult attends a few hours a day (activities, meals, supervision) and returns home at night. Useful when the family can provide care at night but not during the day.
Temporary stay
Lodging for days or weeks, ideal for post-surgery recovery or to give the caregiver a break.
